In the early 1940's Pete & Mabel Sawyer obtained the land, on which they built Oakview Lodge, from the then Premier, Leslie Frost. This property had been designated to be held inperpetuity for the use of cottagers for camping and parking. Some cottagers fought the sale of this public land, but were unsuccessful. Thus came about the existence of Oakview Lodge. Pete was a fishing and hunting guide and Mabel cooked the meals and took care of the lodge. They owned Oakview Lodge until 1973, when Pete's health started to deteriorate. The lodge has changed hands numerous times over the years. In May of 2002 Krenar and Valerie Kulla purchased the property and have built it into a thriving Ontario resort with many upgrades and a popular licensed fine dining restaurant.

The township's population is only 1,976, but it grows substantially larger during the prime summer months of July and August when tourists arrive and people return to their Haliburton cottages. The township was formed when Stanhope and Sherborne et al townships amalgamated in 2001 and includes the hamlets of Boshkung, Buttermilk Falls, Halls Lake Little Hawk Lake, Maple Lake, Ox Narrows, Oxtongue Lake, half of the village of Carnarvon and half the village of Dorset.
Visitors have been coming to the Haliburton Highlands for more than 100 years. The Highlands of Haliburton has long been a favorite destination for cottage vacations, Ontario resort holidays, lakeside lodge stays, and wilderness escapes, due to its remarkable natural beauty and many clean clear lakes. Ontario's Haliburton Highlands received its name due to its close resemblance to the wild and rugged Scottish Highlands. One of the highest places in Canada, at its highest point Haliburton sits at 1,450 feet above sea level.
When the first Haliburton tourists came to the area, they stayed in tents and or rented rooms from year round residents. Many of the original Haliburton inns and lodges began as family homes that took in lodgers, giving them a room and meals as a way for the family to supplement their income. As transportation to the area improved, greater numbers of tourists began to arrive and more Haliburton lodges and inns began to appear that were more like resorts than rooming houses. It was about this time, in the 1940s, that Oakview Lodge was built.
Naturally, today's Oakview Lodge is a much different place than it was when it first opened its doors over 70 years ago. With gourmet dining, luxuriously appointed suites and modern amenities, it's a far cry from what guests on a Haliburton vacation were offered long ago. Still, the best parts of our historic old Haliburton lodge remain the same to this day. The stunning natural beauty of our lakeside setting and spectacular vistas of Little Hawk Lake, which is as clean and clear as it was decades before. Oakview Lodge has also retained its original cottage country charm and inviting ambiance.

Little Hawk Lake
Little Hawk Lake has crystal clear water, sand beaches and rocky cliffs. Almost all of the cottages on Little Hawk are water access only and the majority of the property surrounding the lake is Crown land. It is 280 feet deep at its deepest point. It connects to Big Hawk Lake at two points. Both lakes have lake trout and bass for fishing enthusiasts. There are numerous portages into smaller surrounding lakes. Many of these lakes are virtually untouched. There are a couple of forests which have three hundred old hemlock trees. This lake district is stunningly beautiful.
Just Experience It!
For just a moment close your eyes, take a deep breath and remember the freshest air you've ever smelled. Were you in the Ontario lake country? Remember diving into cool, crystal clear water, feeling refreshed and invigorated. Where was that? Perhaps the Haliburton/Muskoka tourist region. Think about feeling the awe of Mother Nature all around you ... walking under the forest canopy, being soothed by the sound of a fast flowing stream, listening to the song of tree toads. Go back to a romantic picnic on the shore of a beautiful lake after cycling in to find the most private, intimate place to spend time with the love of your life. You open the picnic basket and find a chilled bottle of wine and a bounty of gourmet fare, imported cheeses, flatbreads, fresh strawberries and a single red rose. You laugh, swim, look up at the sky and find animal shapes in the white, fluffy clouds, hold hands and look into each other's eyes. A perfect day, a perfect memory ... you must have been here at Little Hawk Lake in the Algonquin Highlands. Think back to that perfect place where you stayed and everything exceeded your expectations. It was an Ontario country inn, a hidden jewel in the Haliburton Highlands with warm ambience, welcoming hosts, unbelievable food, exceptional wines, good times and star filled romantic nights. You didn't want this Ontario getaway to end. There were still so many things to see and do. But responsibilities, work and day to day life demanded your attention. You reluctantly say goodbye but make a promise to return to Oakview Lodge an Ontario country inn you will never forget.
Hidden Away Country Inn
We recently had the opportunity to accommodate guests from Ireland. This romantic couple were exploring the Algonquin Muskoka area by car and happened upon our country inn completely by accident. They arrived later in the day and were exhausted from their travels. 'Do you have a room for the night?' they asked hopefully. They chose our newly decorated Sunrise Suite which looks out over Little Hawk Lake. Shortly thereafter they came down to our fireside lounge for a relaxing cocktail. They began to relate the details of their travels throughout Ontario. This romantic couple had been to Ontario before and throughout their visits they had pretty well seen and done it all. This trip they made their way through Algonquin Park and were excited to show us photos of a moose they met along the way. Neither had ever seen a moose in the wild. What a thrill! After enjoying a gourmet meal in our screened porch they decided to take a stroll down by the lake where our resident loon welcomed them with his lonesome call. As they were returning to the inn they met a foursome who had just finished dinner and were about to head home. They stopped to chat and coincidentally one of the other couples had spent their honeymoon in Ireland 42 years ago. It was like old home week. The next morning our Irish couple bid us a reluctant goodbye with promises to tell all their friends about the charming Ontario country inn they found hidden away in the heart of the Haliburton Highlands. A few hours later they called us to thank us again for our hospitality and the fabulous food. And to top off their Ontario vacation ... they saw a couple of black bears at the landfill site as they were heading out. It was our good fortune to have the opportunity to meet this terrific couple and be part of their positive vacation experience in Ontario. Margaret and Brian, if you should happen to read this ... thank you for sharing your stories with us.
Away Of Life
Does life seem to be getting more stressful each day? No time to stop and smell the roses? You need to be here in the Algonquin Highlands where getting back to nature is a way of life. Fresh, clean air, crystal clear lakes, no deadlines or schedules knocks the heck out of stress and lets you totally relax and rejuvenate. This verdant Ontario destination lays claim to some of the most beautiful scenery and natural wonders. And the best part about the great outdoors is that it's free. There is no price on hiking under the forest canopy looking for wild flowers and unique species of birds or gently tubing down the Kennisis river while watching the world go by or taking a canoe to a private place on an uninhabited lake and enjoying a leisurely picnic lunch as you watch the water striders play on the water. These simple pleasures re-awaken your senses and rejuvenate your soul. When you feel like the world is crashing in on you come visit us in the Haliburton Highlands, Ontario. I guarantee you'll love it.
Choose our Ontario country inn in the beautiful Haliburton Highlands for your relaxing getaway from the city or for your romantic weekend by the lake. We like to think of Oakview as a small jewel, hidden in the magnificent forests, lakes and scenery of Haliburton County. Our lakefront lodge is small enough that we can cater to your every whim, yet large enough to offer all the services and amenities that you would except to find at a larger, less intimate resort property. Our guests tell us that they love Oakview because of its small size, its quiet and relaxed atmosphere and the attention paid to all the details that can turn a good Ontario getaway weekend into a fabulous resort holiday.
